Tissue folds are structural motifs essential to organ function. In the developing intestine, folding transforms a flat epithelium into villi – finger-like structures that are critical for nutrient absorption. Despite their importance, how villi are generated has remained a mystery. In my talk, I will describe an active mechanical process in which aggregates of mesenchymal cells initiate villus formation by generating forces that fold the overlying epithelium. This process occurs through a mechanism analogous to the formation of water droplets, revealing how physical forces can drive patterned tissue architecture.
